Leader or Cheerleader

I always thought that leaders are supposed to lead.

But what about leaders in a democratic society where politicians have to dance to whatever tunes that please the crowd to stay in power?

Do democratic leaders lead or follow the public?

What happened to visionaries?

Or am I asking the wrong questions all together...

[NYTimes: The Art of the Possible]

"For many years, the singular term of praise for a successful politician was not leader but “statesman,” with its emphasis on administrative rather than visionary gifts. A statesman, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, “is skilled in the management of public affairs.” He understands the political system and knows which levers to pull, how hard and — above all — when to pull them."

you are right! That was an occurate observation! In a democratic society politicians have to dance to whatever tunes that please the crowd to stay in power. But how it is well said politics are usually the executive expression of human immaturity. It is just the case.
