Queens of Night
The notion of seeing Mozart's "Magic Flute" in the Midwest is sufficiently ridiculous that I decided to give it a try the other day.
Although I know absolutely nothing about opera, I did have a CD with this Queen of the Night Aria "Der Hölle Rache", which was wonderfully angelic, except that...
no, it shouldn't be. not according to the theater's German->English subtitle that I was trying NOT to read.
This lovely song, one of the most celebrated pieces of opera, is actually about vengeance, murder and revenge~!
O_o
This Queen was persuading her daughter to kill someone.
Shocking.
Even more so than our soprano missing her top note.
Perhaps Damrau's Angry Witch of the Night was indeed more appropriate...
[Gosh I didn't know Mozart was so much *more* than a musical genius. Who knew he'd criticize the Catholic church and gender inequality... in a 200yo fairy tale?!]
