A Tale of Two Kansas Cities
In my pursuit of scientific happiness (and jogging beefcakes), I have moved to the charmless heartland of America at this small town/city called Kansas City.
It sits uncomfortably on the border between 2 red neck States and has never quite figured out if it's really part of Kansas or part of Missouri.
Very often you find people root for one state in football, but then another state in baseball. Just like it's schizophrenic geographical location, Kansas City has a bipolar mentality.
Soon after I arrived in the summer of 2007, I encountered face-to-face those Fred Phelps branch of Baptist crazy fuckers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westboro_Baptist_Church).
Yes, just like you see them on TV picketing at soldier's funerals, these brainwashed zombies were protesting with banners saying "God Hate Fags" and stamping on the rainbow flag. They even use their 10yo kids! This time, it was Matthew Sheppard's mother giving a talk at my campus to commemorate her gay son's brutal murder by two homophobes. There were police and students all wearing black blocking the campus entrance from these insane beings. How I wished I had a camera!
So you can imagine my surprise when I found this Unitarian Church in my neighbourhood (see pic) flyinig the gay rainbow flag! Even more amazingly, it has on it's wall a banner supporting civil marriage for all including gay and str8 couples.
At this place where democracy worked against civil liberty to ban both same-sex marriage AND same-sex civil unions, I have all the excuse to be angry.

Let California Ring.org

Let Marriage Freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California!
Love is universal. If you believe in equality, please support Same-sex marriage.
In the past couple years, California Legislature has already passed 2 bills approving the freedom to marriage for all, only to be vetoed by Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Later this year the California Supreme Court is expected to rule on the legal right for gay and lesbian couples to marry.
Join millions of like-minded Californians and sign this open letter asking the Governor to tell the court that the current law is unconstitutional and that all loving couples deserve the freedom to marry.
Let's make history together!

The Last Arm of Civil Rights
Another year, another Martin Luther King Day in America.
This day always makes me sad as well as angry. Just reading about the African American's struggle in the past, looking at black-and-white pictures of public water fountains for "colored people" brought me tears. Everytime I listen to Billy Holiday's "Strange Fruit", a cold chill comes down my spine. I sincerely hope that Obama will win the presidential election, and show conservative white America that, ready or not, your racism is out!
Although blacks are not yet as equal as whites, they are, at least, more equal than gays. Can you imagine people nowadays saying things like "Being black is against nature/a disease/against the Bible" or that "Making black as an equal would be a direct challenge to social stability" but without any retribution?? Well this *is* still happening to us gays.
For a nation's embassador to travel with his gay partner, the latter would have to be "employed" as a house boy. When different races are now free to marry each other, Americans would go so far as amending their Constitution to stop gays from getting the same rights that are granted to everyone else.
Justifiably, gay right is said to be the last unfinished arm of the civil right movement. Too bad that unlike being black, which you can't hide, gays can always hide in the closet.
When you saw that rainbow flag icon on my blog, did you crinch? Was there even a fleeting moment of embarrassment? Were you worried ever that someone walking pass may have seen it on your computer screen? Well if you do, WE have some work to do.
